Sault memories

A brief snapshot of two Sault homes that still stand to this day taken in 1932 by Robert S. Platt.

Being in such close vicinity to the ferry dock at the foot of Brock Street at the time, the home in the foreground at 639 Wellington St. E. had rooms for tourists to rent out at a rate of $6.50 a week (roughly $139.40 these days). The home was under the name of Jas. C. Reddick, according to the Vernon's Street Directory for the Sault in 1932 with the also visible and neighbouring house at 635 Wellington St. E. under the name E.G. Freeman.

The third house in the background, at the time inhabited by Rev. C.W. Balfour of St. Luke's Cathedral and known as the deanery for the church, was briefly a youth drop in centre before zoning applications were accepted for the present-day William McMurray Apartments in April 1974.

Today, 639 was most recently the home of Staruck Norman Denture Clinic but appears to be back in residential use as is the same with their neighbours to the west at 635. The apartments that replaced St. Luke's historic deanery are also home to the offices for Anglican Diocese of Algoma.

Though much has changed since Mr. Platt took the above photo such as the street widening and further automobile accommodations leading to the paving of much of the greenery that once was, the cedar shingle siding being replaced with modern substitutes, and the loss of the Deanery, there are still some reminders which remain of what Wellington St. looked like over 90 years ago.

Original photo was taken in 1932 by Robert. S. Platt with present-day comparison taken by Jo Bumbacco in April 2023. Info sourced from the Sault Daily Star: January 8th, 1932, and April 18th, 1974.
