Inside SooToday

"I need a digital camera," I told them 23 years ago when I launched the digital news service that’s now SooToday/Village Media.

"A camera? What do you need a camera for?" they asked.

“Photographs need a lot of bandwidth,” they said.

"I need a camera," I insisted.

So someone rummaged around the storage closets and I was handed a surplus Sony Mavica that no one was using.

75 dpi, as I recall. I carried a pocket full of floppy discs as storage mediia.

Ted Nolan used to talk about how you had find a way to win with what you were given - someone else would always have cooler stuff and a bigger budget.

And so I stepped into the streets of Sault Ste. Marie with my already-obselete Sony Mavica, learned its strengths and weaknesses and showed them how a digital camera could enhance community news coverage.
