Stage 18 of the Giro yesterday, saw a huge split between the breakaway and the peloton. As the breakaways (there were multiple) did not include riders higher up in the general classification, the peloton didn't make an effort to catch them. Therefore, all the GC riders finished well down on the winning rider. Ottawa rider Derek Gee, still held onto 4th place overall.
Although I have yet to see the replay of today's Stage 19, (work seems to get in the way of cycling), Derek is still in 4th place. He lost a handful of seconds, but not enough to push him down in the standings. This will make it more difficult for him to get to stand on the podium at Sunday's race finish, but for now he has maintained 4th and is slightly over a minute ahead of the rider in 5th place. Cheer on all of our Canadian riders !
