What is Reverse Osmosis? - What you need to know

You may have heard of Reverse Osmosis (RO) water, but what does that mean and why does it matter?

Reverse osmosis is a complete water filtration process capable of producing water at high level of filtration.
Stopping more contaminates than your standard Brita filters or fridge filters.

RO uses high pressure to force water through a super fine screen called a membrane. This reduces the presence of unwanted substances and contaminants.

In most RO systems, that membrane is just one part of a multi-stage filtration process designed to maximize performance and water quality. Here’s how it typically works:

  • Pre-filtration: Water first passes through a sediment filter to remove larger particles like sand, silt or rust. It may also go through a carbon filter that targets chlorine and helps improve taste and odour.
  • Reverse osmosis: Under pressure, water moves through the RO membrane, which removes particles as small as a single atom. This stage can reduce up to 95% of total dissolved solids (TDS).
  • Post-filtration: Some systems include additional filters or cartridges to target specific contaminants like microplastics (PFAS),  or pharmaceuticals, depending on your water needs.

This matters because your current filtration system may not be removing the things you want it to. Potentially harmful chemicals like prescription drugs, hormones and microplastics are becoming more known and more of a concern.

There is a huge amount of information about water out there and things can get confusing. What you need to know is where to go for reliable information.
